What should I have purchased ahead of time for an adopted dog?

Aside from the typical items (food, dishes, toys. treats & crate), we want to stress the importance of early-adoption protocols & lost dog prevention.

Rescue dogs pose an elevated risk for breaking away from yards and leashes. When everything feels new and overwhelming, sometimes their strongest instinct is to run away. To prevent any risk of harm or loss, we recommend coming prepared with: 
 • Martingale Collar - these collars are comfy for them, and make it near-impossible to slip away from. 
 • (If applicable) Harness + Seat Belt for your car. 
 • 2 NON-RETRACTABLE Leashes 
 • 1 ID Tag for Collar - these can be purchased at any pet store and should be engraved with your phone number and the dog’s chosen name.
 • If you'd like to take additional precaution, ID tags and GPS trackers for your pup's collar are also great and proactive choices.

What is Foster to Adopt?

When you foster to adopt, you're getting the chance to familiarize yourself with the rescue dog before committing to adoption.

First and foremost, foster to adopt arrangements are just that... fosters! This means you're giving a rescue dog the incredible gift of a safe, secure place to stay until they find their forever family.

During your first 2 weeks as a foster, you get all the perks of fostering! Mentorship from one of our coordinators, and access to food and supplies from us.

If during those 2 weeks you decide to adopt, hooray! If its not a perfect fit, thats ok! We simply ask that you continue to provide a loving home for them until we find them their forever family.

Question 3

Can I meet the dogs before applying?

Unless you catch us at an adoption event, we do not arrange meet and greets with the adoptable dogs without an application submitted.

We do host adoption events in local pet stores fairly often, so keep an eye on our social media!

Question 4

Do you offer post-adoption support?

Accepted Answer

Its not unusual for new and potentially undesirable behaviour to surface as rescue dogs settle into new routines. We want the absolute best for you and your new furry friend, so we are here for you! Its important to note we are not licensed dog trainers or behavioralists, but we can offer advice, and when applicable, referrals to the right professionals to support you on your journey.

Ultimately, responsibility and ownership is in our adopters hands when it comes to taking the right steps once a dog is adopted.

Can I adopt if I am outside of Ontario?

Out-of-province adoptions are rare for us, and offered on a case-by-case basis. We do not adopt to individuals outside of Canada.

Question 6

Do you guarantee health & temperament of the dogs?

Accepted Answer

No, we cannot guarantee a dog's temperament or health. 
That said, we do everything in our ability to set you and our dogs up for healthy fulfilling lives. We do this by: 
 • Offering full transparency with vet records (when available). We will never intentionally withhold medical information. 
 • All dogs receive basic veterinary care at a minimum, before being adopted out. This includes up-to-date vaccinations, and spay/neuter surgery when applicable.

Question 7

Why do you rescue dogs outside of Canada. Aren't there enough that need help IN Canada?

In our humble opinion, a dog in need is a dog in need. We feel passionate about our consistent work with Texas partners, and feel strongly that our decision to rescue dogs in Texas has a big and meaningful impact.

Texas has a serious problem with stray dogs, and Ontario boasts a high demand for dog adoption.

While we rescue plenty outside of Canada, we also rescue plenty in Canada! We often bring dogs in from Manitoba, and take local surrenders on a case-by-case basis.
